When Excavation Is Required
Trenchless lining is our first choice — it's faster, less disruptive, and less expensive. But some pipe conditions can't be lined. When the pipe is too far gone for lining, excavation is the right call. We camera-inspect every sewer line before recommending excavation, and we only recommend it when it's genuinely necessary.

Camera Inspection
HD sewer camera inspection maps the exact location, depth, and condition of the failed section. We mark the dig area precisely so excavation is targeted — not exploratory.
Permit Coordination
We pull the required permits and coordinate with the city before any excavation begins. All work is performed to code, with city inspection at completion.
Open-Cut Excavation
We excavate to the pipe using a mini-excavator or hand tools depending on access. We protect adjacent utilities, landscaping, and structures throughout the dig.
Pipe Removal & Replacement
The failed section is removed and replaced with new PVC or cast iron pipe, properly bedded in clean sand and gravel. All joints are sealed and the grade is corrected.
Compacted Backfill
The trench is backfilled in lifts and mechanically compacted to prevent settling. We match the original grade and leave the surface ready for restoration.
Surface Restoration
Concrete, asphalt, pavers, or lawn — we restore the surface to match the surrounding area. City inspection is scheduled and completed before we close the job.
When Lining Won't Work
Conditions That Require Excavation
Collapsed Pipe
A fully or partially collapsed sewer line cannot be lined — the liner needs a structurally intact host pipe to bond to. Collapse is most common in old clay tile and cast iron lines that have been deteriorating for decades.
Severe Pipe Belly
A belly is a low spot where the pipe has settled and sags below the normal grade. Sewage pools in the belly, causing chronic backups. Lining follows the existing grade — it can't fix a belly. Only excavation and re-grading corrects it.
Large Joint Offsets
When pipe sections have shifted significantly at the joints — due to soil movement, tree roots, or settling — the offset can be too severe for a liner to bridge. Excavation exposes the joint so the pipe can be realigned and replaced.
Multiple Failures
When a line has multiple collapse points, severe root intrusion throughout, and significant bellying — all in the same run — full replacement is more cost-effective than attempting to address each failure individually.
Pipe Material Failure
Orangeburg pipe (a tar-paper composite used from the 1940s through the 1970s) deteriorates from the inside out and cannot be lined. When we find Orangeburg, replacement is the only option.
Emergency Collapse
A sudden sewer line collapse — often triggered by heavy rain, soil movement, or a large root mass — requires immediate excavation. We respond 24/7 to emergency sewer collapses.

How do you know if I need excavation vs. pipe lining?
Camera inspection tells us. We run an HD sewer camera through the line and assess the pipe condition: structural integrity, grade, joint alignment, and material type. If the pipe can support a liner, we recommend lining. If it can't — collapsed sections, severe bellies, large offsets, or Orangeburg material — we recommend excavation. We never recommend excavation when lining is a viable option.
How long does sewer line excavation take?
Most residential sewer line excavations take 1–3 days depending on the length of the failed section, depth, access, and surface restoration requirements. We'll give you a timeline estimate after the camera inspection. We work efficiently and don't leave open trenches overnight when it can be avoided.
Do you handle the permits?
Yes. We pull all required permits and coordinate city inspections from start to finish. You don't need to deal with the city — we handle it. All work is performed to code and inspected before the job is closed.
Will you restore my lawn or driveway after excavation?
Yes. Surface restoration is included in every excavation job. We restore concrete, asphalt, pavers, and lawn to match the surrounding area. We compact the backfill properly to prevent settling, and we don't consider the job done until the surface is restored.
What is Orangeburg pipe and why does it need to be replaced?
Orangeburg is a pipe material made from layers of tar paper and pitch, used in residential construction from the 1940s through the 1970s. It was intended to last 50 years but typically fails much sooner — it absorbs moisture, softens, and deforms into an oval or collapsed shape. It cannot be lined because it has no structural integrity to bond to. If your home was built before 1975 and has never had the sewer lateral replaced, there's a reasonable chance it's Orangeburg.
Can you excavate under a driveway or sidewalk?
Yes. We use directional boring for short runs under driveways and sidewalks when possible — it avoids cutting the surface entirely. For longer runs or when boring isn't feasible, we cut and restore the concrete or asphalt. We'll tell you which approach applies to your situation after the camera inspection.
Prefer No Excavation?
