What is a meter coupling and why does it fail?
The meter coupling is the fitting that connects your water meter to the supply line entering your home. Most are compression-style brass fittings. Over time, the rubber gaskets inside compress and crack, the brass corrodes, or the fitting loosens from ground movement and freeze-thaw cycles. When it fails, water escapes at the meter — before it ever reaches your home's plumbing.
Can I fix a leaking meter coupling myself?
No. The meter and its immediate connections are utility property. Working on them without authorization can result in fines and liability for any downstream damage. The curb stop (the shutoff at the street) must be operated to replace the coupling — that requires a licensed plumber coordinating with your water utility.
How do I know if my meter is leaking vs. a pipe inside my house?
Check the meter pit — the small concrete or plastic box near the street or sidewalk. If there's standing water in the pit or the ground around it is consistently wet, the leak is at or near the meter. A leak inside the house will show up as wet walls, ceilings, or floors. You can also shut off every fixture and appliance and watch the meter dial — if it's still moving, water is escaping somewhere.
Will the city fix a leaking meter coupling?
It depends on your municipality. In most Metro Detroit communities, the water utility owns the meter and the curb stop. The homeowner owns everything from the meter to the house. The coupling itself sits at that boundary — some utilities will replace it, others won't.
